Salt Watermelon to Prevent Dehydration
✨ 1% Better Mondays: Restorative Cooling Watermelon to Refresh and Hydrate
Good Morning Monday!
We’re entering our second heatwave of the season in the Northeastern United States, and summer is just getting started.
IN A HEAT WAVE? 🥵
Feeling dehydrated?
Don’t ditch the salt—your body needs it. In extreme heat or after sweating, you lose both water and sodium. Replacing only the water can lead to low sodium levels, a potentially dangerous condition known as hyponatremia in extreme cases of overhydration.
A simple solution? Salted watermelon. We often hear about replacing electrolytes after sweating, but what about using real food to do the job?
It’s hydrating, rich in potassium, and with a sprinkle of salt, it helps replenish what you’ve lost.
Why salt your watermelon?
Watermelon is naturally rich in water, electrolytes like potassium, and a small amount of magnesium, making it an excellent choice for rehydration. But after heavy sweating, you lose sodium, and watermelon is low in this key electrolyte. A light sprinkle of salt not only enhances the flavor but also helps replenish the sodium you’ve lost.
On hot summer days or after a workout, watermelon can be blended into a smoothie, added to a salad, or eaten straight from the rind. I’ve even made watermelon iced tea.
Is it enough?
For a casual day at the beach or a backyard BBQ, salted watermelon is a delicious, natural way to help restore your electrolyte balance. However, if you’re training hard or spending hours in the heat, you may require a more comprehensive electrolyte replacement. Still, for most of us, this simple trick is a refreshing and smart way to stay cool and hydrated throughout the summer.

Aunt Phyllis said she used to put salt on watermelon as a kid! I thought it was odd but I guess her mom was on to something back then
