A Seasoned Herbalist Learns How to Repair Her Own Infertility
The Practice Q&A: Finally understand what's preventing you from becoming pregnant
Dear Reader,
In the ICU and ER, I watched chronic illnesses arrive at their endpoints—the slow result of decades of metabolic breakdown. It taught me that true prevention isn’t about supplements or step counts; it’s about the deeper architecture of a life.
What does that architecture look like for the experts?
Introducing The Practice Q&A, a new monthly series exclusive.
I’m interviewing seasoned clinicians, herbalists, and front-line healers. I didn’t ask for the polished advice they give patients. I asked what they actually do themselves—what they’ve unlearned, and what they refuse to compromise on.
No sponsors. Just the real, hard-earned protocols of people who know the system inside out.

“I know what it feels like to desperately want a baby and to feel like your life is on hold while trying to conceive.” — Liane Moccia
Q. What first called you to your healing path, and what made staying on it undeniable?
A. My own struggle with infertility is what started me down the path toward becoming an herbalist. I was searching for answers and ways to support my body during a really difficult time. Discovering herbal medicine gave me a sense of empowerment, and the shift I felt in my own health was remarkable. I cannot imagine my life today without herbs.
Q. Was there a single moment or person that redefined healing for you?
A. I worked with a client who had been trying to conceive for almost two years while also dealing with debilitating periods every month. After six months of working together, she still wasn’t pregnant but said, “I have never been happier. My periods are finally pain-free.”
That moment changed how I think about healing. Pregnancy may be our goal, but healing is also about helping someone feel better in their body and improving their quality of life along the way.
Q. What did you have to surrender or unlearn to fully step into this work?
A. I’ve learned that the most powerful changes often come from small, foundational shifts that move someone closer to optimal health over time. Each step builds on the previous, and we do not have to do everything at once.
Q. How has your own healing shaped the way you serve others?
A. I know what it feels like to desperately want a baby and to feel like your life is on hold while trying to conceive. That’s why I don’t believe mental health, stress, sleep, and overall well-being should be put off until “later.” They are foundational to both fertility and quality of life, and I believe they deserve attention from the very beginning. This is what led me to write the book I wish I had when I was going fertility challenges.
Q. What does a true “practice” of healing look like in your daily life?
A. For me, healing is found in the everyday things: a cup of herbal tea, a walk outside, a good night’s sleep, time with family, and moments of quiet in a busy day. I’ve learned that health is rarely transformed by one dramatic change. More often, it’s the small things we do consistently that have the biggest impact over time.

Fertility today
Liane’s philosophy of healing is the one this newsletter is built on: health is made in the small things we do every day, not the heroic ones. The quiet acts compound.
If you or someone you love is struggling to conceive, her book is a genuine resource — recipes, personal stories, and practical guides for supporting egg and sperm health. Fertility is an overwhelming topic to navigate alone, and it’s hard to know what’s accurate and what’s hype in the online health world. Liane’s book is extensively researched. There is real science and clinical practice behind what she writes.
Which brings me to something I watched recently with my daughters: The Plastic Detox (2026), now streaming on Netflix. Informative and disturbing. The film follows six couples with unexplained infertility through a 90-day plastic detox guided by epidemiologist Dr. Shanna Swan. The mechanism is the story: endocrine-disrupting chemicals in everyday plastics — BPA, phthalates — mimic our hormones. It’s one reason global sperm counts keep falling.
The chemical load in our environment is working against us. But that’s exactly Liane’s point, and Dr. Swan’s: exposure builds from small daily choices — which means it can be unbuilt the same way.
